Fresno Police crackdown on graffiti Writters

Calif. (KFSN) — An attempt to crackdown on graffiti has led to more than 200 arrests by Fresno Police including suspects in a recent homicide.

Officers in the southeast area of the city conducted more than 200 parole and probation searches of known taggers over the last two weeks. Undercover operations also were conducted in widely known tagging areas.

Fresno Police officers say they have seen a spike in graffiti-related violence. Investigators say in the past three months there have been eight tagging related shootings in the City of Fresno.

Officers say rival taggers are beginning to act more like gang members and crews are now carrying guns.

“What we’re seeing kids being killed; being shot over graffiti. Tagging crews are becoming more violent and that’s a concern for us,” said Capt. Randy Dobbins with the Fresno Police Dept.

The graffiti investigation helped police identify the suspects in a recent homicide. They say the shooting on Turner and Maple Avenue on March 8th was directly related to feuds between two tagger crews.

One suspect, Shane Bernal, has been arrested in connection with the murder. Police are still looking for two others, Jesus Melgarejo and Carlos Luna.

“‘Exit Through the Gift Shop’ offers an absorbing glimpse of a bracingly subversive slice of the culture, as well as some tantalizing images of Banksy at work.” – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post

“An exhilarating hall-of-mirrors look at what happens when global art fame turns anonymous, artists become objects, fans turn into artists, and the whole what’s-sincere-and-what’s-a-sham spectacle is more fun than art was ever supposed to be.” – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

Synopsis

Banksy is a graffiti artist with a global reputation whose work can be seen on walls from post-hurricane New Orleans to the separation barrier on the Palestinian West Bank. Fiercely guarding his anonymity to avoid prosecution, Banksy has so far resisted all attempts to be captured on film. Exit Through the Gift Shop tells the incredible true story of how an eccentric French shop keeper turned documentary maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner. The film contains exclusive footage of Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Invader and many of the world’s most infamous graffiti artists at work, on walls and in interview. As Banksy describes it, “It’s basically the story of how one man set out to film the un-filmable. And failed.”
